PepsiCo joins Coca-Cola in exploring cannabis drinks

The remarks come two weeks after PepsiCo's archrival Coca-Cola said it was studying "wellness beverages" that could include cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive component in cannabis that is sold in a growing variety of consumer products. Molson Coors is also working with a Canadian company on cannabis-infused non-alcoholic beverages, while Constellation Brands has announced a hefty $4 billion investment in Canada's Canopy Growth in exchange for a 38 percent stake in Canopy.

Cannabis-laced drinks could be a US$600M market in U.S. by 2022

Canaccord sees the demand for beverages featuring CBD, or cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive compound in marijuana, reaching $260 million by 2022, up from the “negligible revenue” the limited number of drinks contributes now, while THC-based drinks could reach $340 million, up from $106 million expected this year.

The entry of Diageo (DEO.N) – which sells big-name brands like Guinness beer and Crown Royal Canadian whisky – into the cannabis market would be another milestone in the burgeoning sector that has seen other major alcohol players such as Molson Coors Brewing Co. (TAP.N 1.09%) and Constellation Brands Inc. (STZ.N 0.57%) enter the space to fend off pot from cannibalizing alcohol sales.
